Prince’s Purple Rain Musical to Light Up Broadway in 2027
Prince’s legendary Purple Rain is heading to Broadway, bringing one of music’s most iconic stories to the stage. Following a successful premiere in Minneapolis, the musical adaptation of the groundbreaking 1984 film and Grammy-winning album will begin preview performances at New York City’s Majestic Theatre on March 12, 2027, with an official opening night scheduled for April 12, 2027.
Directed by Tony Award nominee Saheem Ali, the production reimagines Prince’s beloved story of "The Kid," a talented young musician striving for success while navigating family struggles, fierce competition, and complicated relationships in Minneapolis’ vibrant music scene.
Audiences can expect a soundtrack packed with more than 20 of Prince’s greatest hits, including “Let’s Go Crazy,” “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” “Take Me with U,” “The Beautiful Ones,” and the timeless anthem “Purple Rain.”
The Broadway production features choreography by Emmy Award winner Ebony Williams and music supervision by Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb, with longtime Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes serving as music advisors to help preserve the spirit and authenticity of Prince’s artistry.
More than four decades after the original film captivated audiences worldwide and cemented Prince’s place in music history, Purple Rain continues to inspire new generations. The Broadway adaptation promises to celebrate his enduring legacy while introducing his groundbreaking music and unforgettable story to an entirely new audience.
