Cumulus Media Announces New Round of Layoffs Amid Financial Restructuring
Cumulus Media has implemented a new round of workforce reductions impacting employees across sales, programming, management, and digital operations. The layoffs are part of the company's ongoing restructuring efforts as it works through its Chapter 11 reorganization plan.
Restructuring Efforts Continue
The company entered a prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy process in March 2026. In April, a federal court approved Cumulus Media's reorganization plan, which is intended to eliminate approximately $592 million in debt and transition ownership to its lenders. The company is currently awaiting final approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to complete its emergence from bankruptcy.
Markets Impacted
While Cumulus has not disclosed the total number of employees affected, reports indicate that staff reductions have occurred across multiple markets, including:
California
Michigan
Arkansas
South Carolina
Alabama
Louisiana
Illinois
New York
Washington, D.C.
Notable Departures
Among the most visible personnel changes were the departures of veteran sports broadcasters Greg Papa and Greg Silver from San Francisco sports station KNBR. Several program directors, on-air personalities, and management staff members in various markets were also affected.
Podcast and Digital Operations Adjustments
The restructuring has extended to the Cumulus Podcast Network, where several senior leaders have exited the company, including Carolyn Chauncey, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Podcasting, and Jason "Jay" Soderberg, Vice President of Podcast Operations and Production.
Despite the reductions, company representatives have stated that the podcast division remains active and continues to operate with a substantial team supporting its growing portfolio of shows.
Looking Ahead
The latest workforce reductions reflect broader challenges facing the radio and broadcast industry as companies adapt to changing consumer habits, increased digital competition, and economic pressures. Cumulus Media's restructuring strategy aims to strengthen its financial position while continuing to serve audiences across its extensive national network of radio stations and digital platforms.
